Reframe of the Day: Generationals – Spinoza
How did I miss this one?
Twelve years ago, I had my indie rock A-game on—Mac DeMarco, Tame Impala, Arcade Fire….
But this track?
It’s like coincidental crack… or karaoke on ketamine.
So I pull up the official video for Spinoza on YouTube. And Boom. Members of Generationals running through the streets of New Orleans.
The French Quarter, Mid-City and other neighborhoods in the city of New Orleans. It’s funny how the world works.
The familiarity of the shots of the band running through the streets of New Orleans is not lost on me.
I’ve lived in New Orleans since the summer of 2020, living, scouting, driving shots, filming in the Quarter.
It’s all coming back to me.
There in Mid-City
They’re in the French Quarter—
I know these streets like the top of my head.
Dumaine Street was the first street I lived on in New Orleans.
Music plays such a vital role in the Crescent City.
When COVID hit and Mardi Gras was cancelled, we had our own party off the bayou, off the Dumaine Bridge.
One hundred and fifty of our closest friends showed up.
I ended up getting interviewed by the local NBC affiliate.
“The day might have been cold, but the sun came out. And the brass band played.”
I'll post the interview at some point.
Watch the Generationals video, y’all—and if you live in New Orleans, LMK if u recognize any streets.
Find a way to be positive. And upbeat.
That’s what a Stoic would say.
We just have to be open to it.
Open to the possibilities.
Music opens our minds and hearts.
And then—another Generationals song comes on.
And now I’m bopping my head.
How did I miss these guys?
It’s fun to discover something that’s been here for a while, just waiting.
Bonus Generationals Track: Put a Light On
So, here's the kicker.
AI, give me a "concise history of the band Generationals."
AI, who said I wanted a “concise” history of the band. My hunch rang true.
Two high school friends: Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer, from New Orleans, LA. Ted & Grant were previously in a band together called Eames Era. Generationals began in 2008. Oh well, it’s better late than never to find a gem like Spinoza. And support a New Orleans band at that.
Cheers.
